Kalpakkam

Kalpakkam is situated about 70km south of Chennai on the coromandal coast of Bay of Bengal. It is surrounded by historic Sathurangapattinum (Sadras) at its north, Pudupattinam at its south and Bay of Bengal. It is famous for nuclear power plant and research work which includes Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS), Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Ltd (BHAVINI). These institutes come under Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). 6500 scientists, engineers and technical personnel along with their family are residing in the triplet township i.e Kalpakkam-Anupuram-Ammaipakkam.





Back water, lot of greenery, parks, sea etc. are some major attractions of the township. Backwater is the habitat of migratory and water birds. Truly, these townships are well maintained and picturesque one.

The Durgotsav in Kalpakkam was started in the year of 1997. This year, the twin township of Kalpakkam-Anupuram is all set to invoke goddess Durga with the usual gaiety and grandeur for the 20th year while celebrating Durgotsav-2016 from 6th to 11th October. The celebration of Durgotsav is a major socio-cultural event in the lives of residents and acts as a unifying force amongst people from all walks of life irrespective of their caste, creed, and religion.
